The Commission on Aging advises the Recreation and Parks Department on community matters of senior citizen interest such as recreation, social and nutritional services. Meetings are held at 12:00 noon on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at the Senior Community Center.

THE CITY OF TULARE is committed to providing a quality of life for its older residents that emphasizes productive and meaningful experiences and encourages continued independence and involvement in the community. A full range of social and health services as well as leisure activities are provided that enable older adults to pursue favorite interests and explore new ones in a congenial atmosphere. If you are over 55 years of age, please visit the beautiful Senior Community Center located at 201 North "F" Street between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The staff will provide you with monthly activity calendars and further information on the many programs available each month.

Nutrition                                            

Terrific hot, home-cooked meals, served with a smile and enjoyed with friends. Don't eat alone, join us Monday through Friday for lunch at 11:30 a.m. at the Senior Community Center. Reservations for seniors 60 years of age and older are to be made by 8:30 a.m. for lunch.   A donation of $2.50 is requested per meal.  Guest fee for persons 6 years of age and older is $5.00 per meal. Seniors are invited to stop by the center and pick up the monthly meal calendar.  Nutrition education and related speakers, entertainment, and a variety of activities are also offered during the week.  Please call the Senior Center at 685-2330 for lunch reservations.  You may also call 685-2330 the night before and leave a message.

MEALS ON WHEELS

Tulare presently provides home-delivered hot or frozen meals to a limited number of eligible seniors who are frail, isolated or recovering from an illness or hospitalization that confines them to their home. Contact the center for further information or qualifications concerning the program. The suggested donation is $2.00/per meal.

Transportation

Can't drive, but would like to visit with friends and have lunch at the Senior Center?  Call 685-2330 and we will pick you up at your home.  Free bus/Dial-a-Ride passes are available to and from the Senior Center.

Information and Referral

This program provides seniors with an information center that shares community resources and refers seniors to services of many different kinds. The staff is available to offer assistance in the area of health, housing, education and employment. To speak with a Community Services Specialist from Tulare County's Health and Human Services Agency for legal issues/assistance and various social services, please call 685-2513. If you wish to call the County directly, there is a toll free phone number:  1-800-321-2462.

HICAP Insurance

Staff will direct seniors to meet with a HICAP Specialist from Tulare County's Health & Human Services Agency for services related to Medicare, Medi-Cal and Private Health Insurance. You will receive an unbiased assessment that will better enable you to evaluate the various programs available. They will also provide assistance with medical billings, claims and appeals problems.  Blood Pressure Screening/Health Care    

A variety of health professionals provide screening as a special service for seniors 55 or older visiting the Senior Community Center. This FREE program, sponsored by Tulare Nursing and Rehab., is held every first and third Thursday at 10:00 a.m.   FREE Health examinations which include Cholesterol Testing are done and Blood Pressure Screenings are taken.  Individual records will be maintained.  Hearing tests are given by appointment only on Fridays from  9am – 11 am.

California Advance Health Care Directive (AHCD)

An advance directive is a legal document that expresses a person’s health care wishes in advance, and is to be used should that person become incapacitated and unable to express those wishes.  It carries ethical, moral, and legal weight, and doctors/health care providers are obligated to follow it.  Kings/Tulare Area Agency on Aging Community Service Specialists are available to assist in completion of the CAHCD at the Tulare Senior Center.  Appointments are required and are taken for every Wednesday, from 8 a.m. – 12 noon.  Please call 1-800-321-2462 or 685-2513.

AARP Driver Safety Program

This driver's education class is for those over the age of 55 will include discussion on what the effects are of aging and medication on driving. Basic driving rules, license renewal, local traffic hazards and accident prevention will be covered. This course is approved by the Department of Motor Vehicle.  Call 685-2330 for more information.


August 4 and 11 from 1 – 5 p.m.  (must attend both classes)
November 3 and 10 from 1 – 5 p.m.  (must attend both classes)

Fee is $12 per student for AARP Members, or $14 for Non-members. 
**Be sure to bring your AARP Membership Card to receive $2 discount.

         

Senior Softball

 

This program offers an opportunity for recreation, exercise and some friendly competition. Most importantly, the program has modified rules which emphasize physical safety. So come and have some fun on the ball diamond. League play begins March through October. This is a 55+ and a 63+ league which will afford an opportunity to play against some of the best players in the area! A team fee of $300 plus $18 ASA fee for 55+ teams and $200 plus $18 ASA fee for 63+ teams must be made at the Senior Center.
